Let's start with our newsletter,

Last year, one of my Accelerator students sent me a message in January:

“I think I messed up. I’ve applied to 150 roles. Two interviews. Both rejected. I don’t know if I’m built for this.”

He had:

  • CMU admit
  • Intel on his resume
  • AI background
  • Strong academics

And still… zero traction.

Let me tell you what actually changed his trajectory. A system shift.

Phase 1: The Ego Crash

When he landed in the U.S., he thought:

  • Good university
  • Good brand
  • Decent experience
  • PM pivot will be manageable

Reality check?

150 applications → 0 offers
3 months → no interviews
Resume revised 15 times

This is where most people spiral.

Instead, we rebuilt from scratch.

Phase 2: Warm Networking (Strategic, Not Desperate)

Before most students even land, they start applying blindly.

He did something different.

He spoke to 40+ product managers before classes even started.

Not for referrals.

For intelligence.

He asked:

  • When do PM internships open?
  • How many does your company hire?
  • What actually matters in screening?

He learned something brutal:

Some cohorts of 200 students had only 3 PM interns.

This changed his expectations.

This is why I tell Accelerator students: If you don’t know the hiring math, you are playing blind.

Phase 3: Resume Identity Shift

He had a pure engineering resume.

99% model accuracy.
Published GitHub models.
Technical benchmarks.

Great engineer.
Wrong positioning.

We rebuilt it through a product lens.

Instead of:
“Improved model accuracy to 99%.”

It became:
“Improved model adoption by X%, reduced manual workflow by Y hours weekly.”

Same work.
Different framing.
Different identity.

You must become the role before you get the role.

Most students try to “transition” without transforming.

That does not work anymore.

Phase 4: Post-Application Networking (The Real Edge)

Here’s what separated him.

After applying daily, he didn’t just wait.

He:

  1. Applied.
  2. Identified recruiter.
  3. Identified likely hiring manager.
  4. Sent 3-line email:
    • Who he is
    • What value he brings
    • Clear ask: “Would appreciate if you could review my application.”

Every day.
3–5 targeted follow-ups.
For months.

Result?

Faster rejections.
Faster responses.
Actual traction.

One short email later helped move him from software screening to product screening at the same company.

That email changed his career.

Most of you are applying.
Few of you are activating.

The Breaking Point

In January, after final-round rejection, he had a panic attack.

Not because of visa pressure.

Because expectations collapsed.

This is the invisible part no one posts on LinkedIn.

We talked about one thing:

“You are not failing. Your strategy is incomplete.”

So we pivoted.

He started applying to ML roles again as backup.

Confidence came back.

Offers started coming.

And something interesting happened…

When desperation left, performance improved.

He eventually landed:

  • 3 offers
  • 20+ interviews total
  • 600+ applications
  • 70+ mock interviews
  • 1 product role from 1000 applicants

One seat.
He took it.

The Lesson For You

Stop romanticizing:

  • Referrals
  • Brand names
  • Luck
  • Right timing

Start engineering:

  • Application velocity
  • Post-application activation
  • Resume identity alignment
  • Interview reps

Inside the Accelerator, this is exactly what we build:

  • Application tracking sheets
  • Networking scripts
  • Resume rewrites by role
  • Mock interview drills
  • Weekly execution accountability

Because mindset without mechanics is useless.

If you are serious about playing at this level,
You need systems, not hope.

More in the next newsletter - I’ll break down how he converted 1 seat out of 1000 applicants.

P.S. If you’re already applying and not seeing traction, you don’t need more motivation.
You need a strategy rebuild. That’s what we do inside the Job Hunting Accelerator.
