When I came to the U.S. in 2014, I thought I had everything figured out.

I was 22. I had a master's admit. Six months of work experience. And a lot of confidence.

What I didn't have was clarity.

I didn't know:

• what industry I wanted to work in
• what companies I wanted to target
• what city gave me the best opportunities
• or even what kind of career I wanted to build

I assumed I'd figure it out after landing.

Looking back, that assumption probably made my journey much harder than it needed to be.

Today, after mentoring thousands of students, I see the same pattern over and over again.

Students ask me:

22? 25? 28?

I think that's the wrong question.

The better question is:

How much clarity are you bringing with you?

Before we move on to next part, I have something to mention.

At 22...

You have something incredibly valuable.

Time.

You can experiment. Pivot. Fail. Recover.

But there's one catch.

Internship hiring starts almost as soon as you arrive.

If you don't know which roles you're targeting, you'll end up applying everywhere.

And when you apply everywhere...

You usually get nowhere.

At 25...

You probably have a few years of experience. That's a huge advantage. But only if it's meaningful experience.

If you've built products...

Solved real problems...

Worked with customers...

Your stories become your biggest asset. If not, you're almost starting from scratch again.

At 28...

You usually know yourself much better.

You know what kind of work you enjoy. You know what industries excite you. But the margin for error gets smaller.

You've already built a career. Leaving that behind is expensive.

Financially. Emotionally. Professionally.

That's why preparation matters even more.

One thought before you apply

Your university matters. Your GPA matters. Your SOP matters.

But none of those matter as much as knowing where you're trying to go.

Everything else becomes easier.

Choosing a university. Networking. Internships.

Even your resume tells a better story.

So before you ask, "Am I too young?" or "Am I too late?"

Ask yourself something else.

Do I know exactly why I'm coming?

That answer will shape your journey far more than your age ever will.
